In the 1990s, sociologist A. Touraine's thesis about new social movements gaining autonomy from economic exploitation was well-received. However, in the 21st century, left-wing governments in Latin America gave way to right-wing populist authoritarian trends, hindering the formation of a broad popular coalition for pluralistic democratic experiences. There's a call for a new communal humanism to address urgent global threats.
