Apresentação
Writing about the relevance and importance of dependency theories in the contemporary context implies continuing research that deals with the sociology of intellectuals, the history and circulation of ideas, and the revision of modernisation theories in peripheral and semi-peripheral regions as a fundamental part of understanding modernity and global social processes. But it is important not to generalise the conditions of emergence of such theories produced outside the European and North American centre as if they were intellectual productions common to all societies of the Global South. Such a generalisation would only contribute to taking away the merit of intellectuals from semiperipheral systems who have sought to theorise about modernisation from within national societies that have experienced important processes of industrialisation and the formation of middle and working classes politically articulated in parties and unions. It was as a localised experience in Latin American history that dependency theories were able to become a reference for the expansion of the critique of modernisation in different regions of the planet.
